Recently I’ve been getting requests for recommendations to online reading libraries. Here is an updated list of sites recommended by the Instructional Technology coaches.

Tumblebooks are e-books for e-kids. The website can be accessed through the New York Public Library kid’s page.

Teachingbooks is a great site for author studies and book resources. There are hundreds of books to choose from and links to authors’ websites. The books readings are audio only.

Storylineonline is brought to you by the Screen Actors Guild Foundation, with streaming videos of children’s books by well known celebrities. There are additional activities and downloadable activity guides for each book.

Free electronic e-books are available at The Gutenberg Project in their 20,000 online book catalog. The books are text version only, but can be downloaded to your computer or Palm using their free Plucker software.

Librivox calls itself an acoustical liberation of books in the public domain. These are audio only mp3 files which are read and recorded by volunteers.

lock.gifSeveral weeks ago I left my laptop on while I went out to do a few errands. When I arrived home and returned to my computer, I was confronted with that dreadful blue screen. I restarted, first in normal mode, then in safe mode, but was not able to get beyone the blue screen. Frantic, I phoned my son, a systems engineer and computer programmer, begging him to stop by to check out the problem. Long story short, the only solution was to reinstall the operating system, causing me to lose all my data and applications. Lesson learned, I found the perfect, low cost, backup solution…CARBONITE. Carbonite’s automatic online backup offers unlimited storage capacity and instantly detects and backs up files. There are other backup services, but Carbonite is the most cost effective, at $50 per year, and it even offers a FREE 15 day trial.
